The classes will involve mostly hands-on learning with some traditional classroom elements. The demand for skilled workers with non-destructive testing (NDT) certifications is high because a limited number of colleges provide programs in NDT and many workers are set to retire in the near future. Therefore, students who earn NDT certifications are likely to find a job that pays well quickly.
The average annual salary for an NDT technician in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S is $92,734, according to the PQNDT salary survey of 2013. The survey also reported a 7 percent growth in full-time NDT professionals since 2011, which is a sign of a stable future.
NDT involves examining parts, metals, and welds for cracks and flaws. It is known as “non-destructive” because the parts tested are not destroyed in the process. NDT workers may work in a variety of settings such as a lab, office, fabrication shop or field environment.
“Typical work days for lab or fabrication shop NDT technicians involve calibrating and setting up equipment, review of procedures and quality requirements, examination of the components, and reporting documentation,” said Ival Martin, president of Aerial Energy Resources.
Training and education is often the first step people take in building a career. Korri Avenengo, Senior Field Service Engineer of Aerial Energy Resources considers the upcoming classes to be the beginning of a promising career for those who enroll.
“A career in non-destructive testing can be very rewarding because you play a pivotal role in many industries such as manufacturing, oil and gas, power and energy production, and transportation; the work you do is crucial to the safe operations on any project you are part of,” said Avenengo.
